giant utensil wall art | our diy home

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

Months ago I woke up early one Sunday morning and rather than waking up the fam (well more importantly the dog) I laid in bed on Pinterest planning out my future dining room for when we finally, one day, own a home. I saw these silverware silhouettes and knew I needed them! I didn't think the day would come so soon though.

We started by buying a sheet of plywood and asking the lovely men in orange vests at Home Depot to cut the board in four rectangles (12x24). Once we got home we spent a lot of time (like 2+ hours probably) drawing out the shape of the utensils on the boards. It took a lot of erasing and stepping back to look some more and trying again to get the shape just right.

Once we got them all traced out, mr g took his jigsaw (that we so cleverly rested on the backs of chairs since we aren't cool enough to own sawhorses) and cut them all out. As you can see in the background, it was dark. Pretty sure our neighbors hate us now from all the ruckus but oh well.

After they were all cut out we sanded the heck out of the edges to make them smooth and round. Then they got a lovely coat of blackboard paint.

After a night of drying, we nailed some sawtooth hangers in the back of each board and onto the wall they went. I'm so excited with how they turned out!! Couldn't have asked for it to be any better.

  2. Hi,

I am in love with this! I will be copying it soon, very soon. I just bought and cut the ply wood.

I am now trying to decide the best way to pencil out the utensils. I think I will print stencils from my printer. However, I was hoping you would give me an idea of the size of the utensils, so I can use those as guidelines to cut out the stencils.

    and...how did you hang them??

    Eagerly anticipating your response :)

    1. Hi Danique! The cutouts are about 2.5 feet tall. I just free handed them with pencil. To hang them I nailed in some sawtooth picture hangers centered on the back of each them. Good luck! When you're finished I would love to see how they turned out!

    1. Hi Victoria!

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I somehow missed your comment. I would love to make you a set. I would charge $75 plus the cost of shipping. Let me know what you think.
